Women in Leadership: Challenges and Way Forward
Around 800 million women are expected to enter the global economy over 2012 - 2022. This third billion - as significant as that of the billion-plus populations of India and China - will play a considerable role in countries around the world. However, data points in India and across the show shows that women are significantly under-represented in leadership positions.
In 2017, India ranked third lowest of the third year consecutively in the leadership roles held by women. Only 17% of senior roles were held by women in India and 41% of the Indian businesses surveyed had no women in leadership roles.
Even in the not profit sector, which is often perceived as a domain for women, women constituted close to 53% of employees across designations and only 34% in managerial positions. The percentage of women in managerial or higher-ranked positions varied based on which gender heads the NGO. In women-led organizations, 75% of female employees had managerial roles, whereas only 15% of female employees had managerial roles in men-led organizations. Similarly, an international study of 1,000 non-profit organizations showed that only 43% of non-profit organizations had women CEOs, which reduced to 18% in the largest non-profits.
In this context, a critical question becomes: What can organizations do to ensure that the third billion realizes its potential?
